So the other day I spoke about the state of our food. I wanted to let you know that I also use supplements due to this very reason. Since I also eat food besides my superfood protein shakes, I take supplements to ensure that my body gets all the nutrients it needs outside of my shakes. The shakes contain what my body needs for part of the day. Unfortunately, the food I eat doesn't always contain the rest of the nutrients that my body needs. I eat local, organic, grass-fed, and wild as much as possible, but I also need to supplement these items with food from the grocery store. Even the organic foods in the grocery store don't contain the nutrients that they used to. Here's an article that I wrote for my chiropractor's newsletter on the need to supplement. Enjoy!
Do you need to supplement with vitamins and minerals?
In my opinion, the answer is “YES!” I believe that every person needs to take a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. Perhaps you wonder what makes me make this bold statement? I make this statement due to the state of our food in this day and age.
Here are some shocking facts that the food of today just doesn’t have the nutrients that it used to only 50 years ago!
Why is there so much nutrient loss? It is due to modern farming practices and soil abuse as well as genetically modified produce. If the soil doesn’t contain the nutrient, the food can’t contain the nutrient either. It is also due to pesticide use which has destroyed the naturally occurring organisms in the soil which used to give back to the produce that was grown there. Due to these things, our food will just never be enough again.
The reality is that if our body is lacking in even one essential nutrient, dis-ease occurs. This is why replenishing just that one nutrient can help the body to heal in the beautiful and intelligent way that only it can!
There are some things that we can do to ensure that we are getting all that we need. One is to ensure that you choose organic food as much as possible. This helps to ensure that the soil is not further depleted by pesticide use and also prevents your body from needing to work so hard to remove those pesticides from itself. More on this in a future article! Another is to buy locally produced foods as much as possible.
Food from the grocery store has been picked way too early so it can’t have all the nutrients it should, then the majority of the remaining nutrients are lost in long transit times as the goods travel from far off locations. In essence, what you end up eating is calories instead of flooding your body with the nutrients that it craves so much! Since food is fuel for your body, putting these garbage foods into your body is like putting diesel in your Ferrari! Locally produced food also supports local farmers.
Grass-fed and wild are far superior as well so choose them when you can. Grass-fed beef actually contains omega 3 fatty acids which are essential for your body whereas other beef does not contain this vital nutrient. Finally, as I so boldly stated above, we all need to supplement with a quality multi-vitamin and mineral.
How do you tell if your supplement is quality? One way is to look at the list of ingredients. If you see things like:
- Hydrogenated oils
- Artificial flavours
- Artificial colours
- Titanium oxide
- Magnesium silicate
- B Vitamins
- Vitamin E
- Gingko Biloba
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Going back to cravings, here are some common cravings and the nutrient that your body is actually looking for as well as some common foods that “should” contain these nutrients provided they are farmed properly.

The rest of the morning and part of the afternoon, Joe, Ethan and I spent purging stuff from the basement. We didn't get it all done by any means, but we sure made a good dent in it. I am on a mission to clean, organize, and purge. My new questions during this exercise are, "Does it bring me joy?" and "Do I use it?" If the answer is,"Yes" to bothof these questions then we keep it and find a place for it. We're making space in our lives for new experiences, new things, and new opportunities!
It was a medium day so besides my two superfood protein shakes, I had three meals which consisted of one meal meat and veggies, and two meals meat, veggies, and a complex carbohydrate. Today's complex carbohydrates were carrots and sweet potatoes.
In the afternoon, Joe, Ethan, and I headed out for a hike at Rock Dunder which is just around the corner from our house. It was a gorgeous day for a hike. Unfortunately, there was still a lot of ice so we didn't make it to the top, but we enjoyed it as far as we could go. It was wonderful to get outside, enjoy some fresh air, and spend time together as a family. After the hike, I had my other superfood protein shake.
