Do you know why I use my superfood protein shakes? One of the reasons is because our food does not contain the nutrients that it used to and I like to flood my body with the nutrients it needs so that it can perform the way it is meant to. Even when we are lacking one required nutrient, it can lead to dis-ease in our body. The other reason is that it is convenient to take with me so that I always know I can get quality whole food when I am out and about. It is not always easy to find a nutritious meal away from home. Finally, I love the fact that I get all the nutrition that my body needs packed into that convenient meal and it is only $3.57 for my vegan shake. You would be hard pressed to find a meal that contains as much nutrition as my shake for that price! I am not a vegan as I think many people know. I eat meat; however, I am allergic to whey protein from cow's dairy which is why I use the vegan shake. Along with my superfood protein shakes, I choose organic, local, grass-fed, and wild as much as possible.
Why does our food no longer contain the nutrients that it needs? There are a number of reasons for this. These include soil depletion from modern farming practices, nutrients lost in transit, food picked too early for long transits, pesticides, and genetically modification. When the soil does not contain the nutrients to begin with, these nutrients cannot be transferred to the food that is grown in that soil. Since our food is often grown elsewhere and then transported to us, it is picked way to early so it won't spoil in transit. This means that the food does not get the opportunity to obtain all the nutrients that it can from the soil and then during the long transit times, the nutrients that are there are slowly lost. This means that the food we now buy in the grocery store is more empty calories than it is nutrient-dense like our bodies need. Pesticides kill the beneficial organisms in the soil which help to provide nutrients to the soil and the plants. Also, when we ingest these pesticides, our bodies do not know how to process them and so they store them in fat. Yes, even skinny people have fat. It is just around their organs where we can't see it. This visceral fat is even more dangerous than the fat we can see. This storage of toxins in fat is part of the reason that some people have difficulty losing weight. Their body refuses to release the fat because it is using the fat to keep the toxins away from vital organs. Or if the person does lose weight, this is why they gain it back because their body is desperately trying to protect its vital organs. Finally, genetic modification may produce more yield, but it is a substance that our bodies do not recognize as food. Our body does not know what to do with these items when eaten. Often our bodies believe these foods to be allergens and if continuously eaten, the body begins to attack itself leading to autoimmune conditions and increased allergies.
After my shake, I got things ready for the day and took Ethan to school. I then headed to my Mom's to work for the day. Part of the day was spent applying for jobs and looking for contracts, part of the day was spent learning a new programming language to open up more contract opportunities for me, and part of the day was spent speaking to people about their health and their nutrition.
It was a medium day so my three other meals besides my two superfood protein shakes consisted of one meal of meat and green veggies and then two meals of meat, green veggies, and complex carbohydrate. Today's complex carbohydrates were carrots for one meal and sweet potatoes for the other.
When we got home, I did my upper body workout and then had my other superfood protein shake with Recover in it.
After dinner, Ethan, Joe, and I watched a movie together and then headed to bed. It was an early night as Ethan had his championship game on Saturday morning! Exciting!
