A ketogenic diet (ketosis or keto) is a very low-carb eating program which turns the body into a fat-burning machine. It has many potential benefits for weight loss as well as health and performance. A keto eating program is designed specifically to result in ketosis. Ketones are produced in the liver from fat. They are then used as fuel throughout the body including the brain. The brain is a hungry organ that consumes lots of energy every day and it can’t run on fat directly. It can only run on glucose… or ketones. On a ketogenic diet your entire body switches its fuel supply to run almost entirely on fat. Insulin levels become very low and fat burning increases dramatically. It becomes easy to access your fat stores to burn them off. This is obviously great if you’re trying to lose weight, but there are also other less obvious benefits, for example, less hunger and a steady supply of energy.
My ketosis program looks like two superfood protein shakes with nut butter in them and three meals of meat and green veggies. The vegetables are restricted to green vegetables for their lower carbohydrate content. Two of the meals have a high fat meat so for me that includes salmon, beef, lamb, etc. The other meal has a low fat meat so for me that means a white fish or chicken or turkey once in a while. The low fat meal I also get to have some nuts with it.
After packing up my food for the day and getting ready, I jumped in the car and headed to Cobourg for a competition workshop. It was a great day because I made a new friend to walk this last leg of the journey with. I also learned that my confidence was not what I thought it was. I let one of the teachers question my poses which really threw me off track and shattered my confidence. I had been practicing so much and felt like I was really ready so it was a good learning experience for me. Thank goodness for my new friend, Jenna, who cheered me up before leaving and then listening to some personal growth CDs on the way home which also helped to reset my mental state.
It is interesting that the closer I get to the date, the easier I am shaken by situations and circumstances that would not usually jar me so much. I love this competition journey for showing me more interesting things about myself that I can improve and grow through! It is serving to get my body and my mind in better condition! The really cool thing about the workshop is that I picked up a few posters to hang around the house.
One I have hung in the bathroom so I can see it each time I brush my teeth each day. One I have hung on the fridge so that I make good food choices. The other I have hung in my workout room to encourage me to work hard during my workouts and to keep going when I feel like giving up! There's also a picture of all the workshop participants.
