After my meditation, I got up and did my morning cardio workout with my new weight vest and followed that by my superfood protein shake. I immediately got down to the business of cleaning! We had a party to prepare for. We had 7 boys joining us for a fun-filled day! Here are a couple of pictures of the party set up. My Mom made cupcakes and we laid them out to be in the shape of a snake.
After the house was tidied, I headed down to do my second workout of the day before the guests arrived. I did my core exercises and my cardio workout, both with my new weight vest on. I love that just adding a bit of extra weight really makes a difference! After my workout, I got cleaned up and waited for the guests to arrive.
Ethan chose a Reptile party as his special birthday party from my Mom. Little Ray's Reptile Zoo came and brought several of their creatures for us to meet. The kids really enjoyed it. Here are several pictures from the show.
We also saw a caimon and a tortoise. The baby snake did not have a name so Ethan got to name him. He chose Ink which I thought was fitting since the snake was black.
Ethan held all of the creatures he was allowed to hold including the tarantula. The Savannah Monitor, Mr Burns, was of special interest to Ethan as it loved to be held and snuggled! Ethan now wants to add another pet to our house; however, we do not have the room for one right now! They require a space that is 6' X 6' X 6'! Perhaps when we have a bigger house someday or if we ever add an addition on! Ethan would have a farm if he could, but I have informed him that doesn't fit in with my traveling lifestyle and so he will need to build himself a farm when he moves out of the house when he is older! He's also requested a tarantula now too! I've told him that our cat, Gillie, and our snake, Peach, are enough for now!
Finally, we saw a lizard which we don't seem to have a picture of, a snapping turtle, and Zeus who was a reticulating python. The lizard's name was Spike because it had a spikey tail. We learned how to move a snapping turtle off the road to safety - either by holding the shell directly behind the back legs (they can twist back quite far) or the best way is to get a big stick which the turtle will bit onto and then you can drag it off the road. This is safest for hands and fingers! Zeus was a party favourite. We learned that reticulating pythons are the biggest snakes (longest) although this used to be thought to be anacondas. Anacondas are the heaviest. The kids loved having Zeus laid across their laps for a picture. She was a small one and we learned that she was the biggest that was allowed to be handled by one adult. Any bigger and two adults are required for safety. They are constrictors and can squeeze so hard that they explode the heart of the creature they are constricting.
Our birthday guide, Amy, was so impressed with Ethan and how he handled the creatures as well as how much he loved them all that she invited him to become a junior herpetologist at the Zoo in the summer. He told her that he is definitely wanting to do that and that he wants to work at the Zoo when he gets older. Herpetology is the branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians (including frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians and reptiles including snakes, lizards, turtles, terrapins, tortoises, crocodilians, and the tuataras).
Before Amy left, she came into Ethan's play room to see Ethan's snake, Peach. Amy was very impressed with the set up that we had for Peach and she was especially happy that we had adopted her from the Zoo. Amy told us that they get about 500 creatures given to them every year because people don't want them or don't know how to care for them. She was especially happy to hear that we had researched corn snakes, which is what Peach is, before getting her.
After the reptile party, it was time to build your own pizza, have some veggies, corn chips with guacamole, and decorate your own cupcakes. Here are some pictures from that portion of the party.
Here's a picture of the whole crew! They're killing themselves laughing in this picture and I love it! They're laughing because Joe is putting bunny ears on my Mom as she takes the picture! Too fun!
All in all, it was a great day filled with fun.
We got home late from the movie and headed straight to bed.
